At the tenth round of the season, the Canadian GP, Andrea Kimi Antonelli brings Italy back to the F1 podium after an almost flawless race.
Italy returns to the F1 podium: Andrea Kimi Antonelli takes third place in Canada. A perfect race from the Mercedes driver, who started fourth and claimed third position at Turn 3, never giving it up again. A commanding, mature performance, cool-headed when it mattered most. The best way to erase a string of poor results and now aim even higher.
“Toto Wolff said over team radio, ‘Little Kimi has grown up,’ congratulating his young driver at the end of the race. A hard-earned result across seventy laps under constant pressure from Oscar Piastri’s McLaren. In the final stages of the race, when the two Woking cars got within a second, the Bologna-born driver held firm and, most importantly, didn’t make any mistakes.
Italy finds its way back to the top tier podium on a day that was once again disappointing for the two Ferrari drivers. When the two MCL39s finally seemed more vulnerable and within reach, Mercedes took advantage. The Brackley team also claimed the win with George Russell, who never really appeared under pressure from his long-time rival, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli, first words after the Canadian GP podium
Interviewed by Nico Rosberg before the podium ceremony, Andrea Kimi Antonelli had this to say about his Grand Prix:
“It was a really stressful race, but I’m super happy. I had a good start, I managed to take third position and stayed up front. In the final stint I pushed a bit too hard behind MaxVerstappen, destroying my front left tyre. That’s why I struggled a bit, but I’m really happy.” – the Italian pointed out at the end of the Montreal race – “At the start I got alongside Piastri and tried to carry a lot of speed between Turns 1 and 2, knowing I’d have the advantage in Turn 3. The car performed well here, and the goal is always to get that win.”
