Argentinians in a frenzy for their hero
It will most likely happen, but seeing Franco Colapinto excluded from the 20 most coveted seats in motorsport will be hard to explain, especially if the Argentine driver continues to deliver all-around performances like he did in the 2024 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix at the 5.513-kilometre Circuit of The Americas in Austin, in front of hundreds of fans who traveled from Argentina and were absolutely ecstatic for their hero. Franco Colapinto repaid their affection and sacrifice with another masterful race.
Starting on hard tires, Franco Colapinto finished the race in tenth place, scoring another point after the four he earned in Baku, Azerbaijan, where he finished in eighth place. The talented young driver even held the fastest lap in the race before Esteban Ocon switched to soft tires at the end to prevent Williams from gaining another point in the battle for eighth place in the Constructors’ standings, where the Grove-based team now has 17 points compared to Alpine’s 13.
“Why did he pit? The Frenchman took the fastest lap from me, he has to give it back,” said a frustrated Franco Colapinto to ESPN. “I wanted the hard tires; if I don’t have a seat to race in 2025, I want to be a strategist.” Blunt and ‘real,’ Franco Colapinto continues to make waves on camera and even teased Fernando Alonso after overtaking him on track. The two-time world champion responded that the Argentinian driver was a second faster because “Williams is the McLaren of the midfield.”
Williams already has an excellent driver lineup for 2025 with Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon, but Logan Sargeant’s exclusion has nevertheless allowed the public to get to know Franco Colapinto, whose mania has exploded in Argentina and is supported by undeniable results, as shown by the stopwatch and standings. In Mexico and Brazil, new waves of fan support are expected for the 2003-born driver.
