Fernando Alonso critical of Liam Lawson after Austin sprint: “It’s his career at stake, not mine”. Fernando Alonso took a jab at the Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson after the Austin Sprint..

Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin 2024

Two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso can still spice things up even when he’s far from the positions that matter. The Spaniard was particularly sharp towards Liam Lawson at the end of the Austin Sprint, as Lawson has permanently replaced Daniel Ricciardo at Racing Bulls starting this weekend.

The incident
The two nearly collided at the braking zone of turn 12 – after the long straight – during an overtaking attempt by Fernando Alonso. Liam Lawson suddenly shut the door at the last moment, creating a dangerous situation that led the Spaniard to angrily complain over the radio: “Guys, the AlphaTauri driver (the team’s old name, ed.) is a real idiot.”

Fernando Alonso’s reaction
Still unhappy, Alonso waited for Lawson in parc fermé to “reprimand” the young driver. The scene, as captured in photos, somewhat recalls Ayrton Senna’s famous scolding of Michael Schumacher at Magny-Cours in ‘92.

“It was a battle, definitely too much,” Fernando later told DAZN España. “Liam has six races to prove he deserves the seat, and without a doubt, this is not the best approach to take. It’s his career at stake, not mine.” – the Aston Martin driver concluded at the end of the United States Grand Prix Sprint race, which was held at the 5.513-kilometre Circuit of The Americas in Austin.
