Red Bull’s recent choice to promote Liam Lawson instead of Yuki Tsunoda has sparked various opinions in the Formula 1 world. Former Haas team principal Gunther Steiner has also shared his view on Red Bull’s decision, suggesting that it might not have been the best one for the team.
Liam Lawson was chosen over Yuki Tsunoda to partner with Max Verstappen for the current season, despite the New Zealander never having held a full-time F1 seat. With only 11 appearances for the Racing Bulls team over the past two years, the decision has left many experts puzzled. Meanwhile, Yuki Tsunoda will continue racing with Racing Bulls and serve as Red Bull’s reserve driver in 2025.
Yuki Tsunoda or Liam Lawson? Gunther Steiner Weighs In
Gunther Steiner emphasized that, in his opinion, Tsunoda should have been given the chance to prove his worth, stating: “I don’t think that was the perfect choice. Everything was a compromise.” According to Steiner, allowing Tsunoda to drive for a year could have provided the team with valuable insight into his performance.
Gunther Steiner also added that the lack of an opportunity for Yuki Tsunoda could impact his motivation. “Now he’s sitting for another year at Racing Bull, and that’s not motivating for the guy,” he said. This situation raises questions about Red Bull’s strategy and their long-term vision.
In short, Gunther Steiner believes the best choice would have been to select Yuki Tsunoda as Sergio Perez’s replacement. Lawson’s lack of experience could be a disadvantage for a team that was dominant in 2023 but has recently appeared much weaker.
