Lando Norris delivered a powerful response to critics by taking pole position for the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix, less than 24 hours after enduring a difficult Sprint qualifying session in which he finished significantly behind his team-mate. The McLaren Racing driver bounced back in emphatic fashion at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit, edging out his team-mate Oscar Piastri by under one tenth of a second in a thrilling final qualifying segment.
On Friday, Lando Norris had been more than six-tenths of a second slower than Oscar Piastri, sparking speculation and commentary about his form. However, after clinching pole on Saturday, the British driver addressed those criticisms head-on, offering a clear explanation for the discrepancy in performance.
“People talked a lot about the gap between me and Oscar yesterday,” Norris told the media after stepping out of his McLaren MCL39. “But there were three tenths just from the slipstream, because I was the one who left the pit lane first and gave him the tow. Of course, there were still things I could’ve done better myself, and today I managed to improve in those areas.”
His words were not only a response to armchair analysts but also a demonstration of his technical awareness and competitive mindset, underlining how fine margins can shape perceptions in Formula 1.
Looking ahead to Sunday’s main Grand Prix, Lando Norris expressed confidence regardless of what the unpredictable Belgian weather might bring. While Spa is notorious for its sudden changes in weather conditions, the McLaren driver made it clear that he believes the team has a competitive package for all scenarios.
“I hope it stays dry, mainly for the fans,” he added. “But over the last 10 years, I think it’s rained here almost every single race weekend. Either way—whether it’s dry, wet, or somewhere in between—we’ve got the best car on the grid, and that’s what really matters.”
Norris’s comments reflect his growing maturity and confidence as a race leader within McLaren, and his pole position marks another high point in what has already been a standout season. With both McLaren drivers consistently battling near the front, the Woking-based team continues to pose a serious threat to traditional front-runners like Red Bull Racing, Ferrari, and Mercedes-AMG Petronas.
As race day at Spa-Francorchamps approaches, the stage is set for an exciting contest, and with Lando Norris leading from the front, expectations are high for a strong result—rain or shine.
