Max Verstappen explains Suzuka comment about McLaren: “Just stating the facts”. Max Verstappen suggested that if he had been driving the McLaren MCL39, he would have .

The 2025 Formula 1 season inevitably revolved around the battle between McLaren and Max Verstappen, a one-versus-two challenge that spanned the entire year and was only resolved in the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi. Signs of this direct, no-holds-barred rivalry, including some verbal jabs, were evident from the early races of the year.

On April 6, during the third Grand Prix of the season, Max Verstappen dominated the spectacular Suzuka circuit, sporting a memorable white and red livery in tribute to Honda, while keeping both McLaren cars behind him. His display of skill and talent was made easier by the characteristics of the Japanese track, which made overtaking extremely difficult.

Provocation or fact? After the race, Max Verstappen quipped almost dismissively about the performance gap between his Red Bull and the McLaren, suggesting that if he had been driving the MCL39, his rivals “wouldn’t have seen me at all! I probably would have already reached Tokyo.” This jab, very much in ‘Verstappen style,’ has been defended by the Dutch driver even now that the season is over, in an interview with the Dutch magazine Formule1.nl.

“That comment after Suzuka? It was a fact. It wasn’t meant to provoke anyone, consciously or unconsciously. It’s just a fact. No one has to agree with it, but that’s how I see it. This is my opinion,” Verstappen emphasized. He added, “Some people might not like hearing it, but in the end, that’s not my problem. I’m not saying it to provoke anyone, but when I’m asked something, I usually give an answer. And yes, that is a fact.” Case closed.

The intensity of the championship battle often spills over into the press, where comments—even those framed as “facts”—add to the drama and rivalry between the top drivers and teams. Verstappen’s unapologetic stance reflects his confidence, but it also fuels the rivalry that made the 2025 season so compelling against the strong McLaren challenge. **Do you agree with Max Verstappen that his comment about the McLaren was simply a fact, or do you view it as a deliberate taunt against his championship rivals?
