Final time on track this year
The end-of-season tests in Abu Dhabi marked McLaren’s first official outing since clinching the Constructors’ Championship title in Sunday’s season finale at Yas Marina. Three drivers took turns behind the wheel of the two papaya-colored cars throughout the day. The car designated for a ‘rookie’ driver was piloted by Mexican Pato O’Ward, while the main car saw Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris alternating stints.
A chance for O’Ward
Collectively, the trio completed 273 laps, covering nearly 1500 km. Among them, O’Ward clocked the fastest time, finishing the session seventh, about seven-tenths off Charles Leclerc’s best lap of the day. “It was amazing to get back into a Formula 1 car,” said the 25-year-old Mexican, who has spent several seasons with Arrow McLaren in the IndyCar Championship. “I loved every second on track; it’s always a fantastic day when you get to drive one.”
“I learned a lot throughout the day,” O’Ward continued. “Gaining more experience on track is always positive, and we tackled various tests, including long and short stints, qualifying simulations, and some practice starts. It’s been great to also be part of the McLaren Formula 1 Team this year, in addition to my commitments with Arrow McLaren. I want to thank Zak, Andrea, and the entire team for the trust they’ve placed in me. I can’t wait to see what we can achieve together in 2025.”
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri reflect
In the morning session, Lando Norris, fresh off his victory at the Abu Dhabi GP, took the wheel. “I enjoyed getting back on track and supporting Pirelli in developing next year’s tires,” said the new vice-world champion. “It’s always useful and great to work closely with them. Now it’s time to relax after such an incredible end to the season. The team deserves some rest before we gear up for next year.”
Finally, Oscar Piastri, who took over from Norris for the afternoon stint, shared his thoughts: “It was nice to get back on track for the last time this year,” said the Australian. “It was great to work with Pirelli, gathering valuable data for next year’s tires. I want to thank the team once again for everything they’ve done this year and for what they’ve achieved in securing the title. Now it’s time for a bit of rest ahead of a challenging 2025.”
