McLaren reclaimed the Constructors’ Championship 26 years after their last victory, but they also achieved another milestone that hadn’t occurred since 1983: here’s what it is.
McLaren’s accomplishment
For the fourth time in history (after 1958, 1969, and 1983), the team that won the title had drivers who were not world champions.
In the first instance, driving for Vanwall, Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks secured the championship for the team. The second occasion came with Matra, where Sir Jackie Stewart—who also won his first individual title that year—and Jean-Pierre Beltoise completed the mission.
The last team to achieve this before McLaren in 2024, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, was Ferrari 41 years ago, thanks to the points contributions of Patrick Tambay and René Arnoux.
The Woking team now hopes to repeat their success in the Constructors’ Championship next year, but with a victory in the Drivers’ Championship as well, which has eluded them since 2008, when Lewis Hamilton edged out Felipe Massa in the final corner of the season.
