George Russell shared his thoughts during the Abu Dhabi GP 2025 press conference, reflecting on his season, the championship battle, and his personal performance against his teammate Kimi Antonelli.
Russell heading to Abu Dhabi
The 2025 season for George Russell has been strong, earning a solid 8 out of 10 rating, especially considering he was the only British driver to interrupt the dominance of McLaren and Red Bull in terms of race wins. Following his contract renewal, however, George Russell experienced a slight dip in form, finishing three of the last four Grands Prix behind his teammate Kimi Antonelli.
For the final race of 2025, George Russell aims to reverse this trend with Antonelli, who has been showing significant improvement, while also seeking to reassert team hierarchy in preparation for the 2026 season.
George Russell’s words
Speaking at the Abu Dhabi press conference, the English driver described the 2025 season as the best of his career so far and offered his opinion on what happened in Qatar and the three-way fight for the world title. “We are here to secure second place in the Constructors’ Championship. It was a shame we didn’t manage it in Qatar, but we have a great opportunity this weekend and will try to achieve it while enjoying the final race of the season. At Lusail, were we held up by traffic? Yes, we have to thank Isack, who sort of forced us to stay stuck in traffic,” George Russell joked, sitting next to the Racing Bulls driver. “Unfortunately, though, we weren’t very competitive. I think Oscar was clearly the fastest of all, and nine times out of ten, when you are very competitive, the result comes. This, however, was the tenth time. Me finishing fourth in the championship like in 2022? I think both seasons were very positive,” George Russell concluded. “But this year, I believe it has been my most competitive. 2022 was very challenging because we experienced porpoising for the first time, and it was a test we had to overcome as a team. That was also my first year competing against Lewis Hamilton, but I think this year has been very positive for me. Who will win the World Championship? Lando.” – the Mercedes driver pointed out ahead of the final round of the 2025 Formula 1 campaign.
With the intra-team battle against the impressive Kimi Antonelli heating up and the 2026 reset looming, George Russell wants to sign off 2025 the way he started it – firmly as the Mercedes lead driver and with another strong result under the Yas Marina lights.
