Gabriel Bortoleto scored his first Formula 1 points at the Austrian GP, showcasing the progress of the Sauber team. From the start of the weekend, the young rookie impressed with strong form, hinting at a significant race ahead since Friday. Much of the credit for this double points finish goes to the team’s upgrades. Led by former Ferrari figure Mattia Binotto, Sauber put tremendous effort into bringing a package that delivered the expected results.
Both drivers quickly found their rhythm, highlighting the team’s good work. However, it was the reigning F2 champion Gabriel Bortoleto who stood out. With his brilliant eighth place at the Austrian GP, he became the youngest Brazilian driver ever to score points in Formula 1 history. This is a proud achievement, even though there was a slight disappointment over missing a pass on Fernando Alonso, his own manager. The two battled in the final laps, with the Spaniard running only one pit stop and much older tires. The two-time world champion managed to hold his position, helped by the arrival of two McLarens that forced Gabriel Bortoleto to ease off.
Gabriel Bortoleto’s words after the race
After the Grand Prix, the young driver said: “What an incredible race! I’m thrilled to have scored my first points in Formula 1, especially since we both scored. It was an extraordinary, intense race from start to finish, and I’m really proud of what we achieved today, together as a team. The pace was good, the strategy worked perfectly, and the whole team did an exceptional job. We managed the weekend well, staying focused at every moment, and finally, I earned my first points.” – he pointed out.
“This shows how much we’ve improved and what we can do when everything works at its best. However, this is just the beginning: for me, it means continuing to push, constantly improve, and aim for even greater results. The battle with Fernando [Alonso] at the end was fun – he didn’t make it easy! – but today the real star was the team, which made this important step forward together.”
