Red Bull is in great difficulty. The drivers’ championship seems out of reach, while the constructors’ championship, despite the safety margin, is increasingly in doubt. Thus, the Austrian team cannot rely solely on Max Verstappen; Sergio Perez’s help is also necessary, and Christian Horner knows this very well.
Horner: “We need to make sure Perez helps us as much as possible”
“Checo was stuck behind Hulkenberg for about 30 laps. Yes, I mean, Checo had a good first lap, but then he really struggled to overtake,” said the Red Bull team principal, talking about the Singapore Grand Prix at the 4.94-kilometre Marina Bay Street Circuit last Sunday.
“Then he had difficulties in some areas with traction, but you know, it is what it is. I think we need two drivers firing on all cylinders,” he added shortly after.
The Mexican finished the race in 10th place, earning only a meager point. This result was once again the consequence of a disappointing qualifying, where he, as has happened many times this year, failed to reach Q3.
“Checo had a good weekend last weekend and a tough one after. We need to string together some weekends where we try to put two drivers on the podium, just like McLaren is doing. It’s those big points that really make the difference.”
However, there are only six races left in the championship, with the Woking team pulling ahead by 41 points and gaining strong momentum.
“So, you know, we need to make sure Checo goes as far as possible from the pack, in terms of finding the right direction.”
