Fernando Alonso disheartened after Miami
The number 14 is very dear to Fernando Alonso and has in fact become part of his identity as a driver, having chosen it consistently since F1 drivers were given this option (2014). However, after Miami, 14 feels less friendly: it’s the gap that separates him from Lance Stroll in the standings. Even worse, it’s 14-0.
In Florida, the two-time world champion was very unlucky, having been taken out of the Sprint by Liam Lawson, while in the GP the limitations of an Aston Martin that was poorly born—and will likely “die” worse, considering resources will soon be fully dedicated to 2026—once again became apparent.
Fernando Alonso’s comments
“Saturday in Miami hurt me and will hurt me for many days. This year there were four or five chances to score points: we lost one in Australia because of the gravel and a mistake of mine, we lost one in China despite the disqualifications (of the Ferrari cars and Pierre Gasly, editor’s note) because I had to retire due to a technical problem—I had flaming brakes on lap one,” he told As. “Now we’ve lost one in the Miami Sprint because I didn’t come into the pits when the track was dry. That’s three missed opportunities, there will be one or two more during the year, let’s try not to waste the next one.”
Fernando Alonso blamed not so much Liam Lawson but rather the team for the management of the Sprint in Florida: in his view, if the team had listened to him and brought him in much earlier to switch to slicks, he could have battled for the podium with Lewis Hamilton.
