Alternating TPC testing and simulator runs with Williams, Browning currently competes full-time in Formula 2, where he is third in the drivers’ standings with two races remaining. The British driver joined the Williams Racing Driver Academy in April 2023 following an extraordinary 2022 season. That year, he impressed everyone by securing the GB3 championship and winning the Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award.
Since joining Williams’ junior program, Luke Browning has continued to shine, winning the 2023 Macau Grand Prix, where he also secured pole position and the fastest lap. He then finished the 2024 F3 season in third place with two victories and now aims to close 2025 on a high in Formula 2, while gaining further F1 experience in Abu Dhabi.

Williams’ statement reads: “Atlassian Williams Racing is pleased to announce that Williams Racing Academy driver Luke Browning will drive Alex Albon’s FW47 in the first free practice session of the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He will also participate in the end-of-season Young Driver Test.”
Luke Browning added: “It will be an unforgettable weekend in Abu Dhabi, balancing the fight for the Formula 2 title with returning to the wheel of the FW47. It’s a challenge I truly appreciate. The Young Driver Test will give me a final opportunity to help the team prepare for 2026, and I can’t wait to take part in an F1 weekend for the last time this season. Thanks again to everyone at the Driver Academy and Williams for their trust.”
Sven Smeets, sporting director of Atlassian Williams Racing, commented: “Luke’s development continues to impress us, and we look forward to closing the season with him at the wheel of the FW47.”
“We have an incredibly talented group of drivers in the Williams Racing Driver Academy, and it’s important for us to give them the opportunity to progress as they climb the ranks. These final sessions of the season will give Luke another valuable chance to learn from Alex [Albon] and Carlos [Sainz], and from the broader team. Additionally, it will allow him to integrate further into our trackside operations as he looks toward a bright future,” he concluded.
