Lando Norris claimed the 2025 Formula 1 world championship at the season finale, leaving all eyes on the young British driver as he secured his first-ever title. Meanwhile, his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri fought relentlessly until the very last race but ultimately fell short of taking the championship.
Second place for Piastri, but not enough for the title
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix marked the conclusion of the 2025 F1 season. Oscar Piastri had led the championship for much of the year, showcasing remarkable consistency and pace. However, in the closing rounds, the situation shifted dramatically. Both Norris and Max Verstappen surged ahead in the standings, leaving Oscar Piastri to settle for third in the final championship rankings. Now, his focus turns to the 2026 season, which promises a new technical regulation and plenty of unknowns for the Australian driver.
Piastri: “I can be satisfied”
During the Abu Dhabi race, McLaren employed an alternative strategy for Oscar Piastri. Despite missing out on the championship, the Australian driver expressed a sense of satisfaction with his performance. He stated:
“Today, I think I can be satisfied. We gave everything, even taking risks with some alternative strategies. We explored every possible way to win the race and stay in the title fight, but in the end, the car didn’t have the right pace. It was a fun challenge, even if at times it wasn’t easy. I believe it has been a fulfilling season for both of us, even though I’m not the champion. I’ve learned so much over these three years; every weekend I gain something from Lando, and it’s great to know that the exchange goes both ways.”
Although the championship slipped through his fingers, Oscar Piastri’s resilience and development throughout the season have been remarkable. With a new era of regulations on the horizon, the Australian will be one of the drivers to watch as McLaren aims to build on their strong 2025 campaign.
