A 2025 Mexican GP Without Checo
The familiar chants of *“Checo, Checo, Checo”* from the grandstands will be absent at the next Mexican GP. Red Bull’s decision to part ways with Sergio Perez at the end of the 2024 Formula 1 season in favor of promoting Liam Lawson alongside Max Verstappen has now raised serious concerns about the smooth organization of the 2025 race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City. Scheduled for the weekend of October 26, 2025, this will be the first edition of the event—since its return to the F1 calendar in 2015—without the presence of the local hero on the grid. This is an unwelcome development for the Grand Prix promoter, which has expressed understandable concerns following the massive crowds drawn in recent years.
The Organizers’ Concerns
Alejandro Soberon, CEO of CIE, the company promoting the Mexican GP, addressed the situation:
“As organizers, we are very concerned about Sergio Perez’s absence from the Formula 1 grid. However, we are working on extending our contract with the championship. We now offer a much better show than we did five years ago, and we believe the competition among drivers and the vibrant colors of our event are enough to keep fans engaged.”
This statement reflects a more cautious—if not outright pessimistic—tone compared to comments made just months ago, before Perez’s departure from Red Bull was confirmed:
“Everything depends on marketing, and while having a local hero is always an advantage, we are confident that fans will find someone else to support if needed.”
The contract with Liberty Media to keep the Mexican GP on the F1 calendar expires in 2025, meaning this year’s race could be the last if renewal negotiations fall through. Meanwhile, speculation in the paddock suggests that Perez could be eyeing a seat with Cadillac in 2026.
