According to a Dutch driver, Oscar Piastri may now be out of contention for the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship—and the reason is far from technical. The Mexican Grand Prix weekend once again reshuffled the championship standings. Lando Norris overtook Oscar Piastri in the title fight, while Max Verstappen has been making a strong comeback. Since the summer break, the Dutch driver has delivered a series of consistent results, closing in on the McLaren duo. With just four races remaining in the season, the championship outcome is far from certain.
Some believe Piastri is out of the running
Despite Oscar Piastri’s efforts, some now consider him effectively out of the title race based on his recent performances. This view comes from Dutch driver Tim Coronel, who shared his thoughts in a recent interview. Coronel explained, “Once certain thoughts start entering your head, confidence begins to drop. You can see it with drivers alongside Max Verstappen—they all get mentally crushed. Oscar Piastri now has Norris performing strongly in his championship, gradually catching up on points. This will destroy Oscar. In my view, he won’t be able to re-enter the title fight. But it would be exciting to see two teammates battling for victory.”
After struggles in Austin and Mexico, it will be interesting to see if and how Oscar Piastri can return to the level he showed just weeks ago. A victory in Brazil could put him back at the top of the championship standings, reshuffling the deck once again and keeping the title battle alive.
