Carlos Sainz furious after penalty for contact with Lawson
Carlos Sainz did not hide his frustration at the end of the Dutch Grand Prix, after being handed a 10-second penalty for his clash with Liam Lawson at Tarzan corner. The Spanish Williams driver, who was enjoying one of his most solid weekends of the season, saw valuable points slip away due to the stewards’ decision.
The dynamics of the incident
The episode occurred at the race restart, with Sainz attempting an outside move on Lawson into Turn 1. According to the stewards, the Williams number 55 was not far enough ahead at the apex of the corner, meaning Racing Bulls had the right to the racing line. On that basis, the officials judged Carlos Sainz to be predominantly at fault for the contact and imposed a 10-second time penalty.
“The FIA doesn’t want to see me” – Sainz
The decision left the Madrid-born driver fuming: “I had an incident that cost me 10 points in the championship, right when I was having one of my best weekends of the year. It’s unacceptable to receive a penalty like this,” said Carlos Sainz immediately after the race, accusing Lawson of “deliberately putting himself at risk of contact just to prevent an overtake.”
The Williams driver also stressed that he was not given the chance to discuss the episode with the stewards, unlike in other similar cases: “The FIA always tells us the doors are open for clarifications, but today I was not allowed in. I got a message saying they didn’t want to see me.”
Liam Lawson’s response
For his part, Liam Lawson admitted the incident was unfortunate for both of them, but pointed out that the regulations were clear: “For it to be ‘his corner’ he needed to be ahead at the apex. He wasn’t, so the penalty was inevitable.”
A debate over wheel-to-wheel rules
The episode reignited debate over how wheel-to-wheel battles are judged in Formula 1, especially on circuits like Zandvoort where the margins for error are minimal. Carlos Sainz will now aim to bounce back, but the regret remains for a wasted opportunity in a weekend that had promised much more.
