Mercedes driver George Russell could play a crucial role in shaping the outcome of this year’s Formula 1 World Championship. Having already won races in Canada and Singapore, the British driver is one of only four competitors to have claimed victories this season. Confident in Mercedes’ progress, George Russell believes there are still opportunities for the team to fight for more wins before the end of the year. The Silver Arrows were particularly dominant at the Las Vegas Grand Prix in 2024, and Russell hopes to repeat that form in the upcoming rounds.
Together with Ferrari, Mercedes could act as a sort of “referee” in the championship fight between Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, and Max Verstappen. Russell made it clear that he won’t treat any of the title contenders differently during the final stretch of the season. “I think the title fight will go all the way to Abu Dhabi,” Russell said. “Until then, I’ll race everyone the same way. Maybe in Abu Dhabi I’ll be a little less aggressive—unless a race win is on the line.”
George Russell has shown his determination in previous battles, such as during the Sprint Race in Texas, where he attempted a daring move on Verstappen, forcing the Red Bull driver to take evasive action into the runoff area. His competitive spirit remains strong, even when the championship is not directly at stake for him.
In Mexico, George Russell drew attention with several heated radio messages, particularly when he pushed for a position swap with teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Reflecting on that race, Russell admitted it had been a chaotic and unpredictable situation. “Looking back, it’s normal to say that we could have managed things better,” he explained. “The point is that I found myself in a strange position because of what happened on the first lap, where I think there was a big injustice, especially toward Lewis Hamilton.”
George Russell added that such experiences serve as valuable lessons for the future. “What I can do is make sure I avoid situations like the one in Mexico. In Formula 1, a tenth of a second can be the difference between starting on the front row or the fourth row—and that can completely change whether you’re fighting for the podium or stuck battling in the midfield.”
The Mercedes driver, who last won in Brazil in 2022, now aims to return to the top step of the podium before the season finale. With the final rounds taking place in Brazil, Las Vegas, and Qatar, Russell’s performances could play a pivotal role in determining who ultimately takes home the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship trophy.
