The arrival of Adrian Newey at Aston Martin has completely transformed the team—let’s take a closer look at what has changed.
The most sought-after engineer in all of Formula 1, Adrian Newey, has joined Aston Martin after his gardening leave. Following a highly successful stint at Red Bull, where he won numerous titles, a new challenge now awaits the Briton. While his technical input will clearly be vital in developing the car, Adrian Newey brings far more than just that.
Adrian Newey began attending Grands Prix with Aston Martin starting from Monaco. His presence in the garage coincided with a clear improvement in the car’s performance. While the latest updates introduced on track aren’t yet influenced by him, his contribution lies in optimising the car’s setup. During his years at Red Bull, Newey demonstrated a remarkable ability to work alongside engineers and drivers to refine the car’s balance between Friday and Saturday.
This aspect plays a key role over the course of a race weekend—especially with a car struggling like the Aston Martin. In F1’s tight midfield, a few thousandths of a second can make the difference between scoring points or not, and in the last two races, the British team has managed to bounce back after a disastrous start to the season.
The additional impact of Adrian Newey
However, Adrian Newey’s influence at Aston Martin is not limited to his work on the car. He has only been with the team for a short time—too little to significantly impact the car’s design—despite being the best in his field. According to Pedro de la Rosa, there is another key factor that should not be underestimated: his ability to attract human capital.
Following Newey’s arrival, numerous engineers from rival teams have shown interest in joining the British squad. Several university students have expressed the same aspiration, eager to work alongside one of the most iconic figures in Formula 1 history.
“In the UK, there’s a real engineers’ market—within 100 kilometres, you find nearly all the teams. Attracting new talent is extremely important. Having Adrian impacts all of this and serves as inspiration for the next generation,” the former Spanish driver stated.
