At the launch event for Mercedes’ partnership with Adidas, Toto Wolff gave a clear picture of the team’s current phase: “We are trying to reinvent ourselves after Lewis Hamilton’s departure.” A significant farewell, not only because of the driver’s talent but also in terms of media impact, as evidenced by the global attention surrounding the seven-time world champion’s move to Ferrari.
Mercedes has chosen to bet on young talent to replace the Briton, bringing in Andrea Kimi Antonelli—a rookie in Formula 1 but one with an impressive record in junior categories. However, alongside the Italian, the team is also relying on what they hope will be a stabilizing force in turbulent times: George Russell.
The decision to entrust one of their two cars to a rookie—especially in a top team like Mercedes—can be interpreted in two ways. First, there is the hope that Antonelli will live up to expectations and prove to be a fast driver with a bright future, despite the necessary adaptation period. Second, it reinforces Russell’s status within the team.
Without Lewis Hamilton, it will be up to the Briton to take on the role of the team’s experienced driver, as he enters his seventh season in Formula 1 and his fourth with Mercedes. George Russell has consistently demonstrated speed over the years, particularly in qualifying, though he has struggled at times with tire management.
Nonetheless, both Wolff and the team have repeatedly expressed their confidence in him, believing that what he lacks is simply a car capable of fighting for the ultimate prize—not just for occasional race wins.
With the W16, Mercedes Hopes for Progress in the Right Direction
Mercedes’ struggles over the past three years, following an era of dominance, along with George Russell’s coexistence with Hamilton, prevented him from immediately stepping into the spotlight. It is no secret that in this ground-effect era, the Silver Arrows have failed to shine, struggling to find a way out of persistent issues.
However, a new season brings new opportunities. On this front, Russell believes that the changes made to the new car will allow for progress in the right direction, particularly in addressing the handling issues in corners that were evident last season.
It will not be a complete revolution, as the Briton explained that many of the updates had been planned for a long time. However, the car required certain modifications to unlock its full potential:
“There have been many… I wouldn’t say drastic changes from last year to this year. These are things that have been in the works for a long time, elements that we couldn’t implement on the 2024 car but have been working on extensively.”
“We are optimistic that it will be a good step in the right direction. Of course, you can never predict what your rivals will do. Over the course of this year, with 2026 in mind, it will be very interesting to see whether teams continue to develop or not,” Russell told Sky Sports F1 during the Adidas partnership launch, which will supply team apparel in 2025.
George Russell Feels Ready to Win the World Championship
George Russell hopes this season will be Mercedes’ chance to bounce back, overcoming the difficulties that have held them back over the past three years. From a personal standpoint, he believes he has all the tools needed to fight for the world title.
When asked if he feels ready to win the championship, the Briton not only expressed confidence in the new season but also explained why he is aiming for the sport’s most coveted prize.
Last season, Russell demonstrated a key strength: being ready to seize opportunities. His two race wins in 2024—along with a third at Spa that was later revoked due to his car being underweight after a strategic decision—were the result of his ability to capitalize on favorable situations. Additionally, he secured two pole positions.
“Absolutely. I feel ready to win the title. Everyone in the team is motivated. Every time we’ve had an opportunity to win, we’ve taken it. That gives me the confidence that if we have a car capable of winning, we can fight for the championship. We are working as hard as possible to make that opportunity happen this year,” the Briton added.
The message is clear: Russell feels ready to fight for the world championship—this very season. Now, it is up to Mercedes to give him the car to make it happen.
