Shocking start
Five races, zero points. A disastrous start to say the least for a two-time world champion like Fernando Alonso and, above all, for Aston Martin, which seems unable to escape a results crisis that has continued since the beginning of the season. A tense atmosphere at the British team, despite the presence of Adrian Newey, who, through his work and the new regulations set for 2026, could provide a valuable contribution to the team’s revival.
The 2026 championship
For now, however, results are not coming. In any case, one key question remains: if Adrian Newey were to perform yet another “miracle”, would the former Ferrari and McLaren driver still have what it takes to remain competitive despite being 44 years old (turning 45 at the end of July 2026)? On this point, another two-time world champion, Emerson Fittipaldi—winner in 1972 and 1974—has little doubt.
Fernando Alonso’s competitiveness
The Brazilian, in an interview reported by soymotor.com, is convinced that Fernando Alonso can not only compete in 2026 but also for several more years: “With Aston Martin, I hope Fernando can show his talent,” he said. “Alonso is very well prepared physically and mentally. There’s no issue—he can compete and will still be very competitive for many years to come. If he has a good car, he’ll be very competitive, and it will be very interesting. In my last year in IndyCar, I was 49 and still competitive. It really depends on the desire to win—on hunger, emotional and spiritual competitiveness. And he is very competitive.” – the former Formula 1 driver concluded.
