Opinions on Sergio Perez
Even before the official announcement of Sergio Perez’s departure from Red Bull in 2025, David Coulthard had expressed a firm belief that the upcoming championship would not feature the Mexican driver, citing a decidedly poor season for Max Verstappen’s former teammate as the reason.
Additionally, prior to the official separation between ‘Checo’ and the Anglo-Austrian team, the 13-time Grand Prix winner also suggested that the delay in the announcement (made in December) was primarily due to financial matters, with Sergio Perez and his management attempting to secure “the biggest possible payout.”
Reactions from Mexico
This statement infuriated Sergio Perez’s #11 fans, as David Coulthard reiterated on the *Formula for Success* podcast: “I expressed an opinion on this very show before the end of the season and simply thought it was a standoff between him and his management,” he explained. “I received some criticism from Mexico, all the usual venomous insults: ‘What do you know? What have you ever achieved?’ and all those lovely things. The fact is, I was simply basing an opinion on the facts. The facts are that Checo, if this were a personality contest or if it were about being one of the most beloved drivers in the paddock, would still have his seat. He’s a brilliant man. He’s done a great job, won many Grands Prix, and can be incredibly proud of his performance, but last season, he couldn’t match Max, and that cost the team valuable points in the Constructors’ Championship.” – the former Formula 1 driver concluded.
