George Russell – Aston Martin: the new era of F1 could bring a sensational team switch
George Russell – Aston Martin is the rumour heating up the paddock. According to Motorsport, the British team sees the Mercedes driver as a potential leader for its 2026 project, coinciding with the introduction of new technical regulations. Adrian Newey, who has just joined the team, will lead the car’s development. And George Russell might be the right figure to lead it on track.
George Russell’s contract with Mercedes expires at the end of 2025. After his win in Montréal, he said: “It doesn’t hurt, for sure. But as I’ve said many times, I’m not worried about next year. I know I’ll be on the grid. I’m driving better than ever and I feel ready to fight for a world title.”
When Motorsport asked him if he was 100% certain to stay with Mercedes, he replied: “My intention is to stay with the Silver Arrows. I’m not talking to other teams. Mercedes gave me the opportunity in F1. I’m loyal, I have no doubts.” Clear words, but interest in him continues to grow in the paddock.
What does Toto Wolff think?
Toto Wolff confirmed that negotiations are ongoing: “We’ve set a timeline. Russell has grown a lot, from a young driver at Williams to a leader at Mercedes. Since Lewis left, George has taken charge. There are no politics, he simply earned that spot.” No signature yet, but there’s optimism.
Aston Martin, however, remains attentive. With Newey heading the technical project, the team wants a strong pair of drivers for the new F1 era. Alonso is signed through 2026, while Stroll races on yearly renewals, though his place is tied to his father Lawrence, the team’s owner. A lead driver is needed.
George Russell, with his experience and speed, could be the right man. And if Aston Martin can offer him a winning car—with Newey onboard—switching teams may no longer be just a dream. “Results like Montréal show that if I get a chance, I take it,” said George. 2026 is getting closer.
