Kimi Antonelli sets a new record, becoming the third youngest driver in F1 history to step onto a podium.
The Canadian GP was a very good one for Mercedes, which secured a double podium—first place for George Russell and third place for Kimi Antonelli.
The 18-year-old is increasingly proving just how great his talent is. After three fairly poor races, he bounced back strongly and achieved a great result for himself and for the team, which returns to second place in the Constructors’ Championship.
The young Italian climbed the F1 podium for the first time in Montreal at the age of 18 years, 9 months and 21 days. This marks yet another historical achievement in F1 for him. Antonelli is now the third youngest driver in the sport’s history to step onto a podium.
Antonelli is also the first Italian to reach the podium since Jarno Trulli at the 2009 Japanese Grand Prix.
Antonelli in the youngest driver rankings
Andrea Kimi Antonelli has entered the ranking of the youngest drivers ever to reach a Formula 1 podium.
First place in the ranking is held by four-time world champion Max Verstappen. He took his first podium at the age of 18 years, 7 months and 15 days. Verstappen’s first F1 victory came in his very first race with Red Bull Racing, at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, where he also became the youngest winner of an F1 race in extraordinary circumstances.
Lance Stroll holds second place. He reached the top three at the age of 18 years, 7 months and 27 days. The Canadian was just a week and a half older than Verstappen when he claimed his unexpected first podium at the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. He came close to second place but lost the battle to Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas.
Third place used to belong to Lando Norris, but now it belongs to Antonelli. The McLaren Briton is now fourth in the standings. His first podium came at the age of 20 years, 7 months and 22 days. He took third place in Austria when the delayed 2020 season, postponed due to Covid, finally began in July.
Fifth place goes to Sebastian Vettel, who claimed his first F1 podium at the age of 21 years, 2 months and 11 days. Just like Verstappen, the German’s first F1 podium was also his first win. Vettel also gave Toro Rosso its first victory at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix, becoming the first F1 race winner for the Red Bull family.
