Ford’s return to F1
At the recent event in Charlotte, where Ford Performance’s official projects were presented, the American manufacturer announced its major return to the WEC and the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2027. However, this is not the only big move. A year ago, the Blue Oval had already revealed its new technical partnership with Red Bull Powertrains starting from the 2026 season, marking its return to Formula 1.
Christian Horner’s excitement
Ford has already begun working with Red Bull on developing the engines that will be used by both the Anglo-Austrian team and Racing Bulls, as they prepare for F1’s new era set to begin in 2026, when the new technical regulations come into effect. “It’s fantastic to kick off 2025 by celebrating Ford Performance as we prepare together for the challenges and changes that await both Formula One and Red Bull in 2026,” said Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner during the first joint appearance of Ford and Red Bull. “It’s an extremely exciting time for the team, and while the prospect of building our own engine is an undertaking that cannot be underestimated, our partnership with Ford is fundamental to the entire project. Ford has a long history, synonymous with success over 120 years of racing and development. Today’s launch is a reflection of that success and growth. Ford is not only crucial for our journey in the power unit sector but also mirrors our dedication to supporting female talent through the sponsorship of the Red Bull Ford Academy Programme. As I said, it’s an exciting moment.”
More than just engines
During the evening, beyond the importance of the new technical partnership, the renewal of the collaboration between the American manufacturer and the Milton Keynes Academy through the Red Bull Ford Academy Programme was also announced. “Formula 1 is our opportunity to showcase Ford technologies on a global stage to a completely new audience, generating excitement for the iconic Ford brand worldwide,” said Jim Farley, President and CEO of Ford Motor Company. “This is an exciting chapter in Ford’s history. Over the past 20 years, Red Bull has transformed the Formula 1 landscape with a determination to do things differently, an ethos that has been reflected in the partnership with Red Bull Ford Powertrains and in the sponsorship of the Red Bull Ford Academy Programme.”
First steps with Ford
Representing the Red Bull Ford Academy was American driver Chloe Chambers, who is set to compete in the upcoming F1 Academy season. Also present among the drivers was New Zealander Liam Lawson, Red Bull’s new signing and Max Verstappen’s new teammate. “It’s really special to start my 2025 with the team at the Ford Performance season launch in Charlotte. It’s such a fun and exciting partner to work with and an iconic brand I’ve loved for a long time. I spend a lot of time in the United States, usually behind the wheel of a Ford Raptor R. The brand is synonymous with motorsport culture, not just here but around the world, and it’s special to be part of the Ford family now. I can’t wait to see the exciting things we can do together this season and what we are building together for 2026,” said Liam Lawson.
