Horner shows serious interest in Alpine: potential partnership with MSP Sports Capital emerges
Rumors about Christian Horner potentially acquiring a stake in Alpine are gaining traction, intertwining with a heavyweight name in sports finance: MSP Sports Capital. This U.S.-based group has previously invested millions in McLaren and continues to operate across media, technology, and global sports.
MSP, the powerhouse that rescued McLaren
According to sources, Horner is in discussions with MSP Sports Capital, the group that in 2020 invested £185 million to acquire a 15% stake in McLaren Racing, valuing the team at around £560 million at the time. The deal came during a critical moment for the Woking-based team, hit by the pandemic and a severe liquidity crisis.
To maintain operational continuity, McLaren had to take out a £150 million loan from the National Bank of Bahrain, as well as sell its headquarters and part of its historic car collection.
Since then, the landscape has changed dramatically: McLaren has climbed the F1 rankings and, by the end of 2024, CYVN Holdings of Abu Dhabi acquired the automotive division and a minority stake in the Formula 1 team. According to financial sources, this operation valued the team at over £3 billion.
The deal also included the purchase of shares held by MSP and other funds such as O’Connor Capital Solutions, Ares Sports, and Caspian Funds, marking the exit of the U.S. group from Woking after significantly stabilizing the team’s finances.
Why a Horner–MSP alliance makes sense
Neither Christian Horner nor MSP have commented on the rumors, but a partnership would not be surprising. MSP is an investor experienced in high-potential sectors—from global media rights to eSports—while Horner, with his Red Bull successes, is a figure capable of maximizing both sporting and industrial projects.
Investors remain convinced that Formula 1 still has significant economic growth potential, especially during a period of global brand expansion and rising international capital interest.
If the negotiations come to fruition, Horner’s entry into Alpine with MSP’s support could reshape technical and financial balances in the paddock. For now, these are just rumors, but the profiles of those involved suggest that if the deal moves forward, its impact could extend far beyond Enstone.
As the F1 world watches closely, the potential for a Christian Horner-led revival at Alpine under the 2026 regulations adds a fascinating layer to the sport’s shifting landscape. Whether this financial firepower translates into on-track dominance remains to have seen, but the intent clearly signals a new era of ambition for the French outfit.
