The upcoming season could be crucial for Alexander Albon. With Carlos Sainz joining Williams, the Anglo-Thai driver may face his toughest teammate since partnering with Max Verstappen.
Carlos Sainz joined Williams after losing his Ferrari seat to Lewis Hamilton. The Spaniard will team up with Albon, who has rebuilt his reputation at Grove following his difficult stint with Red Bull.
Since joining the team in 2022, the Thai driver has narrowly outperformed both Nicholas Latifi and Logan Sargeant. However, he has faced increasing pressure from Franco Colapinto, who replaced the American for the final part of the 2024 season.
Now, the question is whether Albon can withstand the pressure of having a formidable competitor like Carlos Sainz alongside him. Speaking to Casinoutanspelpaus.io, Johnny Herbert discussed the challenges the #23 driver will face with such a strong teammate.
“This season is a huge test for Alex Albon,” he said. “For almost the second time in his career, this is probably the real test. If things don’t go well, his career could become a lot more difficult.”
“Especially when someone like Carlos Sainz arrives, I expect him to be on the pace right away. I know he had his struggles early on at Ferrari and took a long time to understand how the car worked. But once he did, we saw how strong he was,” Herbert continued.
Herbert believes Carlos Sainz can significantly help Williams progress in the coming years. “Sainz is full of confidence and will be able to make the most of it,” he added. “It’s a great opportunity for Williams to have someone like him on board.”
“And for Albon, it will be a major mental battle against Sainz. He has managed to rebuild his career at Williams and has a great reputation, but now he’s facing a driver who has been shining recently. It will be a test for him. And if the two are close in performance, they could push each other to improve on last year’s results.”
