Christian Horner has revealed the extent of his broken relationship with former Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko, explaining how a power struggle following Dietrich Mateschitz’s death in 2022 gradually destroyed their partnership. After working together for two decades and helping turn Red Bull into one of Formula 1’s most successful teams, the former team principal says the two no longer have any relationship.
Speaking to German newspaper BILD following his departure from Red Bull in 2025, Christian Horner described how professional disagreements developed into a deeply personal rift. He accused Helmut Marko of actively working towards his dismissal and expressed particular disappointment at the Austrian’s behaviour during a difficult period in his private life.
Christian Horner reveals final meeting with Helmut Marko after Red Bull exit
For 20 years, Christian Horner and Helmut Marko shared major decisions and celebrated the successes that established Red Bull among Formula 1’s leading teams. Today, however, little appears to remain of the relationship they built during that long collaboration.
Asked about his current relationship with his former colleague, Christian Horner gave a direct answer: “We don’t have one.”
The extent of their estrangement is illustrated by the complete absence of contact since Christian Horner’s final day at Red Bull. Recalling their last meeting, the Briton explained that the two had sat together in his office before he left the team.
“On my last working day at Red Bull, the two of us sat in my office and shook hands at the end. Since then, there has been radio silence.”
The separation appears to have left little prospect of reconciliation, at least from Christian Horner’s perspective. The former Red Bull team principal was particularly affected by what he regarded as a lack of consideration from Helmut Marko during one of the most difficult periods of his personal life.
“It hurt me that he worked so hard to get me fired when my former partner and the mother of my daughter had died shortly before. He didn’t even offer his condolences. That wasn’t the gentlemanly thing to do,” Christian Horner said.
His comments reveal how disagreements within Red Bull’s leadership became intertwined with a personal breakdown in trust. Although the end of their working relationship cannot erase the achievements they shared, it has exposed just how difficult their coexistence had become during their final years together.
How Dietrich Mateschitz’s death triggered the Red Bull power struggle
According to Christian Horner, the roots of his conflict with Helmut Marko stretch back well before his departure in 2025. The decisive turning point was the death of Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz in October 2022, an event that fundamentally changed the internal balance of power.
Until then, Dietrich Mateschitz had been the central authority behind Red Bull’s Formula 1 operation. He had the final say on the most important decisions, helping maintain a balance between the leading figures within the organisation.
After his death, that established structure gradually began to break down. Christian Horner and Helmut Marko found themselves competing for influence, creating a confrontation that also reflected the divide between Red Bull’s British-based Formula 1 team and the group’s Austrian leadership.
Christian Horner explained how he believed Helmut Marko’s position had changed after the loss of the man who had supported the team’s motorsport ambitions.
“Helmut no longer had a role because previously he kept Dietrich informed and convinced him of the direction we were taking. That was no longer necessary, so he focused more on other things.”
The changing leadership structure contributed to growing tensions between two figures who had previously worked closely together. Without Dietrich Mateschitz acting as the ultimate decision-maker, the disagreements became increasingly difficult to manage.
Christian Horner criticises Helmut Marko over young drivers and internal leaks
Among the issues that fuelled the conflict were the treatment of young drivers and the disclosure of confidential team information. Christian Horner believed Helmut Marko was excessively harsh towards emerging talents within Red Bull’s driver development programme.
He was also frustrated that internal details, including race strategies and information concerning drivers, were reaching the media. These disagreements added another layer of tension to an already deteriorating working relationship.
Nevertheless, Christian Horner acknowledged that the problems were not necessarily one-sided.
“But there were certainly also things about me that led him to the breaking point.”
Despite their differences, Christian Horner has not forgotten the support Helmut Marko provided at the beginning of his Red Bull career. The Austrian played an important role in persuading Dietrich Mateschitz to entrust the team principal position to a relatively young British manager.
“Helmut and I worked side by side for 20 years. I owe him a lot because, back then, he supported me with Dietrich when it came to making someone in his early thirties a team principal,” Christian Horner recalled.
That acknowledgement demonstrates the complexity of their relationship. Helmut Marko helped Christian Horner secure the opportunity to lead Red Bull, and the pair subsequently contributed to one of the most successful periods in the team’s Formula 1 history. Yet their professional partnership eventually became a rivalry that neither could resolve.
Christian Horner identifies the moment his partnership with Helmut Marko collapsed
Looking back, Christian Horner believes the relationship became increasingly difficult as the team’s internal power structure evolved. What had once been a successful collaboration gradually turned into an intense struggle for influence, culminating in an apparently definitive split.
“The breakdown came with Dietrich’s death,” Christian Horner concluded.
His assessment identifies October 2022 as the moment Red Bull lost the leadership balance that had held two of its most influential figures together. Although their achievements remain a major part of the team’s history, Christian Horner’s account makes clear that the personal relationship behind those successes has not survived.
