Toto Wolff has played down suggestions that Kimi Antonelli should already be considered the favourite for the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship, despite the Mercedes driver reaching the summer break with a commanding 50-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton. Antonelli has been the outstanding performer of the opening half of the season, but Wolff believes the number of races still to come and Mercedes’ reliability concerns mean the title fight remains far from settled.
The young Italian has undoubtedly been one of the defining figures of the first half of the 2026 campaign, which concluded with the Hungarian Grand Prix on 26 July. Entrusted by Mercedes with the considerable responsibility of replacing Lewis Hamilton after the seven-time World Champion’s move to Ferrari, Kimi Antonelli has made the most of his opportunity and established himself as one of the leading figures of Formula 1’s new regulatory era.
Kimi Antonelli reaches F1 summer break with commanding title lead
The numbers underline the strength of Kimi Antonelli’s campaign. Six victories and six pole positions represent his haul from the opening part of the season, putting him firmly on top of the Formula 1 driver standings heading into the summer break.
Kimi Antonelli holds a 50-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton and has opened a 59-point gap over Mercedes team-mate George Russell. That margin has inevitably increased expectations surrounding the Italian and established him as one of the leading contenders for the World Championship.
His advantage over George Russell is particularly significant given the pressure developing inside Mercedes. The dynamic between the two team-mates is already attracting attention, with Juan Pablo Montoya recently warning about the mental challenge George Russell faces against Kimi Antonelli as the younger driver continues to set the pace.
Toto Wolff refuses to declare Kimi Antonelli the title favourite
Mercedes, however, is determined to keep expectations under control. Toto Wolff has urged caution rather than declaring Kimi Antonelli the clear favourite for the championship, pointing to both the length of the remaining calendar and the possibility of sudden swings in momentum.
“It’s still too early to say,” Toto Wolff said, as quoted by SkySports.com. “There are still so many races to go. A couple of retirements can completely change the situation and we haven’t been flawless in terms of reliability. So we need to continue maximising every single day, from Friday through to Sunday.”
The Mercedes team principal’s warning reflects how many points remain available in the second half of the campaign. Kimi Antonelli’s advantage is substantial, but it cannot yet be considered an absolute guarantee, particularly in a season where the new technical regulations have produced shifting competitive trends between teams.
Formula 1 championships can change quickly after only a handful of difficult weekends. A retirement, reliability failure or poor result can rapidly reduce even a sizeable points advantage, while improvements from rival teams can alter the competitive order over the course of only a few Grands Prix. The wider championship picture has already generated debate following Hungary, with Martin Brundle arguing that McLaren’s Budapest victory opened up the 2026 F1 title battle.
Mercedes focused on execution rather than championship predictions
Toto Wolff therefore prefers to avoid making any premature declarations, instead asking Mercedes to maintain maximum concentration throughout every race weekend.
“Hopefully, in the end, that will be enough,” the Austrian added.
His comments capture the approach Mercedes is taking into the summer break. The team has no intention of being carried away by an extremely positive first half of the season, despite reaching the break at the top of the relevant World Championship standings. Instead, there is an understanding at Brackley that the path towards both titles remains long.
The contrast within Mercedes has also been one of the major themes of the campaign. While Kimi Antonelli has emerged as the championship leader, George Russell’s first half has been more complicated, placing him among the drivers whose 2026 performances have come under scrutiny at the summer break.
Lewis Hamilton remains Antonelli’s closest championship rival
For Kimi Antonelli, however, the summer break arrives at the best possible moment. He has a substantial championship advantage over his nearest rivals and has already demonstrated that he can compete at the highest level despite the enormous expectations that accompanied his promotion to Mercedes.
Lewis Hamilton remains his closest challenger at 50 points behind, meaning the battle between the Mercedes youngster and the seven-time World Champion could become one of the defining stories of the second half of the season. Hamilton’s deficit might have been smaller without several costly weekends, with a breakdown of the points Lewis Hamilton has lost during Ferrari’s 2026 title campaign illustrating how quickly opportunities can disappear in a closely fought championship.
Kimi Antonelli can nevertheless enter the break knowing that he has already established himself among Formula 1’s leading drivers. Six victories, six pole positions and the championship lead have also returned Italian motorsport to the centre of the F1 title conversation. Toto Wolff’s message, though, is clear: Mercedes has achieved an excellent first half of 2026, but there is still far too much racing ahead to consider the championship decided.
