Montoya, the healer, and the golden-tipped wand: 1997 and an order from Helmut Marko
It was 1997. Juan Pablo Montoya would make his Formula 1 debut in 2001 with Williams, but before reaching the pinnacle of motorsport, he had already claimed the 1999 CART title and the 1998 F3000 championship. In 1997, the Colombian was competing in the F1 feeder series and made his debut in the category as a driver for Helmut Marko’s team, RSM Marko, where he achieved three wins and finished second overall in the championship.
During an appearance on the Colombian version of the AS podcast, Juan Pablo Montoya shared a humorous anecdote from that time. Helmut Marko, he revealed, was the only person in his career who ever sent him to see a “doctor.”
“The only person who ever told me to get a check-up because he thought something was wrong with me was Helmut Marko,” Juan Pablo Montoya recounted. “He sent me to a healer because he said, ‘Your speed and your stupidity cannot coexist.’ I was racing for his team and living in an apartment provided by them, so it was a situation where if they told you to jump off a cliff, you jumped. I think I went once or twice at most; nothing came of it. There were all these little objects, including a wand with a golden tip that she used to ‘read energies.’ I spent 100 dollars, which at the time was a fortune for me, considering I sometimes used inline skates to save on a bus ticket.”
This story perfectly captures the infamously blunt and unconventional management style of Helmut Marko, which continues to define the Red Bull Junior Team today. Even in 1997, Marko was searching for ways to channel the immense natural talent of his drivers, even if it meant turning to the supernatural. For Montoya, the “gold-tipped wand” may not have changed his energy, but his stint with Marko clearly provided the springboard for one of the most exciting careers in modern racing history.
