Christian Horner reveals Mercedes tried to replace Toto Wolff with him in 2012

Christian Horner, Red Bull team boss 2024

Christian Horner has revealed that Mercedes attempted to recruit him as its Formula 1 team principal in late 2012, before Toto Wolff joined the German manufacturer. In his new book, Drive, the former Red Bull boss recalls how three-time world champion Niki Lauda personally approached him with an extraordinary financial offer, hoping to persuade him to leave the team he had just guided to three consecutive championship doubles.

The revelation offers a fascinating glimpse into how differently Formula 1 history might have unfolded. Christian Horner ultimately rejected the opportunity out of loyalty to Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz, while Mercedes subsequently appointed Toto Wolff, who would become one of the defining figures of the team’s extraordinary period of dominance.

Christian Horner reveals Niki Lauda’s surprise Mercedes offer

According to Christian Horner’s account in Drive, the approach came around Christmas 2012, when Niki Lauda was serving as Mercedes’ non-executive chairman. The Austrian racing legend wanted to convince the British team principal to leave Red Bull and take charge of the German manufacturer’s Formula 1 operation.

At the time, Christian Horner had established himself as one of the most successful team principals on the grid. Red Bull had just secured its third consecutive Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championship double, with Sebastian Vettel claiming his third world title.

The Mercedes offer followed a series of discussions involving Christian Horner and Lewis Hamilton, who had been considering his future away from McLaren.

Although Christian Horner had spoken with Lewis Hamilton, he ultimately decided against bringing the British driver to Red Bull alongside Sebastian Vettel, who was already a three-time world champion. Instead, he directed Niki Lauda towards Lewis Hamilton, whose agreement to join Mercedes was announced in September 2012.

That decision would eventually prove significant for the competitive balance of Formula 1, although Mercedes’ subsequent attempt to recruit Christian Horner demonstrated that the German manufacturer was also looking to strengthen its leadership structure.

The enormous salary Mercedes offered Christian Horner

Christian Horner admitted that Niki Lauda’s approach took him completely by surprise. The Austrian appeared at his home and presented an extraordinary financial proposal designed to persuade him to leave Red Bull.

In his recollection, Christian Horner described being “caught off guard” when Niki Lauda arrived and laid out “a series of dazzling numbers”. He soon realised that the figures represented the salary Mercedes was prepared to offer him.

As if the size of the proposal were not persuasive enough, Niki Lauda accompanied it with a particularly direct argument about the financial advantages of joining Mercedes.

“Red Bull will never pay you what Mercedes can,” Niki Lauda told him.

Despite the substantial financial incentive, Christian Horner decided that leaving Red Bull was not an option. His relationship with the team and its founder mattered more to him than the opportunity to secure a significantly more lucrative contract elsewhere.

“I feel a duty of loyalty to Dietrich Mateschitz and the team, so, much as I appreciate this offer, I have no intention of moving to Mercedes,” Christian Horner replied.

His decision reflected the strength of his commitment to the organisation he had helped transform into Formula 1’s dominant force during the early 2010s.

Why Christian Horner chose Red Bull over Mercedes

By the end of 2012, Christian Horner had already overseen an extraordinary period of success at Red Bull. Sebastian Vettel had won three consecutive Drivers’ Championships, while the team had secured the Constructors’ Championship in each of those seasons.

The partnership was operating at the highest level, with Red Bull firmly established as the benchmark in Formula 1. Leaving such a successful project would have meant abandoning a team that Christian Horner had helped build into a championship-winning organisation.

The British team principal’s loyalty was rewarded with another remarkable season in 2013. Sebastian Vettel secured a fourth consecutive world title, while Red Bull completed an unprecedented run of four successive Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship doubles.

However, the competitive landscape was about to change dramatically as Formula 1 prepared to introduce its new turbo-hybrid power unit regulations in 2014.

Toto Wolff joined Mercedes and helped build a Formula 1 dynasty

After Christian Horner declined the opportunity, Mercedes turned to another Austrian figure for its leadership structure. Toto Wolff, a former racing driver who had become a successful businessman, joined the team in 2013.

Initially, Toto Wolff worked alongside Ross Brawn, who remained a central figure in the Mercedes organisation during that season. The team’s management structure subsequently evolved, with Toto Wolff and Paddy Lowe dividing the traditional responsibilities of a Formula 1 team principal from 2014 onwards.

Toto Wolff concentrated primarily on political and commercial matters, while Paddy Lowe took responsibility for the technical side of the operation. Their complementary roles helped establish the foundations of one of the most successful periods in Formula 1 history.

Beginning in 2014, Mercedes embarked on a remarkable run of success, securing seven consecutive seasons in which it won both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championships.

Paddy Lowe departed Mercedes ahead of the 2017 Formula 1 season, leaving Toto Wolff to assume the team principal position in its more traditional form.

Christian Horner’s revelation therefore highlights a remarkable alternative path in Formula 1 history. Mercedes had attempted to recruit the man responsible for Red Bull’s early championship dominance, only to see him remain loyal to the Austrian organisation.

Instead, Toto Wolff joined Mercedes and became instrumental in creating another dominant Formula 1 operation. The decision Christian Horner made during that Christmas period in 2012 ultimately helped shape the leadership rivalry that would define much of the following decade.
