Kimi Antonelli crashes limited-edition Mercedes-AMG gift in San Marino
On the evening of Saturday, February 7, 19-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli was involved in an accident while driving his AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ “Motorsport Collectors Edition.” The car, a gift from Stuttgart, had been delivered to the young driver just the previous week. This 612-hp masterpiece is limited to only 200 units.
Unfortunately for Kimi, his experience behind the wheel of this incredible car lasted only a few days—actually, just a few hours. Luckily, the young driver is unharmed. According to the police report, he collided with a guardrail on the superhighway near Serravalle (San Marino), close to his residence, without involving any third parties, pedestrians, or other vehicles.
The incident sparked much discussion yesterday, and some observers raised an interesting question: at only 19 years old, was Andrea Kimi Antonelli legally allowed to drive such a powerful car?
The legal technicality
This is a fascinating question, and here’s the answer for general knowledge. San Marino is an independent republic with its own rules. Regarding a Category B driving license, there are small differences compared to Italy. The local rules require newly licensed drivers to operate vehicles with a power-to-weight ratio of 75 kW per ton (about 102 hp per ton), and a total power not exceeding 105 kW (143 hp) during the first three years after obtaining the license.
However, because Andrea Kimi Antonelli obtained his license in San Marino, he is exempt from these restrictions. This is why he was legally able to drive his AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ “Motorsport Collectors Edition” safely and without concern. We are confident he will be able to do so again once the car has been properly repaired.
As the young Italian talent prepares for his debut season on the world stage, this minor setback serves as a reminder of the immense power he handles both on and off the track. While the car may need a trip to the workshop, the most important news is that Kimi Antonelli is safe and ready to continue his focus on the 2026 F1 championship campaign.
