While Mercedes, Red Bull, and Ferrari are focusing on outright speed, McLaren is prioritizing substance. This comes down to the selection of C3 tires, the softest compounds that will be used on track.

Mercedes, Red Bull, and Ferrari have opted for 20, 18, and 20 sets of C3 tires respectively. McLaren, on the other hand, brought only 8 C3 sets, focusing instead on the slightly harder C2 compound, with 14 sets. The C2 is more durable but offers less performance over a single lap. The British team is making this choice to focus more on long-run performance and to better understand both the aerodynamic and mechanical platform of the car.

Why McLaren made this choice and what it will focus on

Choosing the C2 tires means prioritizing race pace. In Bahrain, a track known for its abrasive surface that “eats” tires, the team wants reliable data on consistency and durability. This approach mirrors Ferrari’s strategy during previous Barcelona tests: minimal soft tires, plenty of medium compounds, focusing on data collection and accumulating track mileage.

This is not a gamble but a calculated plan to build a solid foundation. At Woking, they prefer to avoid the illusion of a record lap time achieved on ultra-soft tires. The focus is entirely on driving quality and the efficiency of the technical package. This decision shows strong confidence in their work in the wind tunnel and simulator.

During this initial phase of testing in Bahrain, McLaren will put qualifying simulations aside to concentrate on understanding the new MCL40. The goal is clear: provide the drivers with a car that is stable, predictable, and consistent, just like last year.
