Ralf Schumacher criticizes Aston Martin after free practice at the F1 Australian GP. The two AMR25s are far from their 2023 glory days when they even seemed capable of challenging Red Bull’s dominance. The path is completely lost, and the feeling is clear: at Silverstone, all eyes are on 2026, as this will be a difficult year.
What happened two seasons ago was just an illusion. Perhaps a coincidence, the result of a positive trajectory before losing direction, or maybe it came from rivals’ mistakes. What seems certain is that Aston Martin will once again have to settle for backmarker positions this year. With Williams and Alpine in great form, consistently scoring points will be difficult.
It’s a warning sign, but one that was probably expected in Silverstone. All efforts—especially those of Adrian Newey—are focused on next season. The goal is to be fully prepared when the new regulatory cycle begins.
Ralf Schumacher: “Aston Martin is a huge disappointment”
Ralf Schumacher has pointed the finger at Lawrence Stroll’s team. The former driver and Sky Sport pundit commented after Friday’s free practice in Melbourne: “It will be a transition year for Aston Martin. Adrian Newey has just arrived, but he is already focused on next year. There will certainly be some new people he will bring from Red Bull or other teams.”
“I don’t expect Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso to be competitive until 2026. This year, the focus is more on ‘enduring’ and restructuring the team. Mike Krack has already had to leave his position as team principal. Overall, I expect another difficult year. It’s a huge disappointment. They started very well [in the past], but then the team was unable to build on that.”
So, the real challenge is postponed to next season when things could truly change, thanks in part to Adrian Newey. That is, of course, unless the new regulations end up being delayed.
