The ideal scenario for Mercedes, in his view, would be to build the entire sporting project around Antonelli, with George Russell operating in a supporting role—a position the British driver is progressively slipping into as the current season unfolds.
“I think Max is slowly running out of options,” Schumacher stated. “Toto Wolff has his adoptive son, who is now in a position to fight for the world championship. If he manages to pull that off, Wolff would be completely crazy to bring someone that strong into the team, which would only increase the internal pressure even further. He has already been through that dynamic with Hamilton and Rosberg; it simply makes no sense. Having a clear number two driver, which George Russell is effectively becoming, would be absolutely perfect.”
