Fernando Alonso’s 2025 Formula 1 season started in a peculiar way in Australia. Aston Martin had two anonymous free practice sessions, with the two-time world champion setting the eighth-fastest time in FP1, two positions ahead of teammate Lance Stroll.
In FP2, the situation was reversed: the Canadian finished ninth, while the Spaniard was much further back in 13th place. The Silverstone-based team has started the new Formula 1 season cautiously, as all expectations are placed on next year, when the car designed by Adrian Newey—who could only start working on it in March 2025—will finally be unveiled.
This year will therefore be a transitional one for the green team, and Alonso is well aware of it. As soon as he stepped out of the car, the Spaniard headed to the interview ring, clearly not in the mood to speak with the media. He admitted to a reporter that he was there only because “it’s mandatory.”
When asked about his impressions of the Melbourne track, Alonso kept up his show: “There’s really nothing to talk about. We got out of the car as usual. There will be 24 Fridays like this. You can ask me anything, I won’t answer.”
Asked whether Aston Martin had any issues, driver #14 simply replied: “I need to review everything with my team and privately discuss what we did today. We did some laps, the car runs, the engine is alive, the brakes are okay, the gearbox shifts gears. Everything’s fine.” – he pointed out.
A tough day for Fernando Alonso, who is expecting an ordeal in rainy Australia—judging by Sunday’s weather forecast.
