In these first seasons in F1, we have come to know the new McLaren driver as an ice-cold man. After a victory, he struggles to express full happiness, and after a negative episode, he manages not to get discouraged. According to Oscar Piastri, this is a fundamental aspect of competition: could emotion management determine the outcome of the championship?
What surprised many about Oscar Piastri after his arrival in F1 is his ability to remain calm, both in positive and negative situations. This trait started to emerge following his first victory, achieved in Hungary in 2024, when the Australian barely cracked a smile. After a few excellent races, the American rounds did not go as planned, but Oscar did not let negativity affect him.
The McLaren driver first emphasized that everyone manages emotions differently, and then explained how he personally handles them: “For me, trying to stay calm is very important and I believe it helps me perform at my best.”
Has Oscar Piastri always been this way, or is it something he has worked on? The McLaren driver explained that, fundamentally, it is something spontaneous, but that over time it has strengthened. “I try to be calm and remain relaxed; I think it comes quite naturally, but there is also a lot of awareness in this.”
Motorsport is loved also because of the emotions it generates, and in fact, Oscar Piastri admitted he has had very emotional moments in his career so far. However, he added: “I have been through it a couple of times during my career, and it has had a rather negative impact.” The driver concluded by highlighting that there are also positive emotions, like the one he felt in China after achieving his first victory of the season.
