A sore wrist and necessary surgery to fix the issue: following the post-qualifying injury in Barcelona, Lance Stroll is doubtful for the F1 Canadian GP, and Felipe Drugovich is eager to take over.
You have to go back several months to find the root of Stroll’s problem after Spanish GP qualifying. It was during pre-season in 2023 when the Canadian was involved in a bicycle accident, which caused a wrist fracture.
That old issue flared up again during the Montmeló weekend, forcing the Montréal driver to withdraw from the Catalan GP.
Canadian GP: Felipe Drugovich puts himself forward to replace Stroll
The injury forced the 1998-born driver to exit the Spanish weekend early. Now, to resolve the issue, Lance Stroll will undergo surgery. His recovery timeline is still unknown, and the 26-year-old Canadian may not be able to take part in his home race on June 15.
Felipe Drugovich, Aston Martin’s reserve driver, is eager to jump in and race on Montréal’s semi-street circuit. The Brazilian is looking forward to the opportunity: “Right now I don’t know what will happen. I wish Lance all the best,” the 25-year-old told “Band.”
The Maringá-born driver is ready to do whatever it takes to seize his chance in Canada, even if it means giving up the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Felipe Drugovich is listed as a Cadillac Whelen driver for the famed endurance race, but that doesn’t matter much. If F1 calls, Drugovich is ready: “Formula 1 has always been my top priority.”
The F1 Canadian Grand Prix will take place the same weekend as the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans, scheduled for Sunday, June 15. After undergoing surgery—planned for today, June 2—Stroll will begin rehabilitation. If he’s forced to miss Montréal, the British team could call on Felipe Drugovich, but for now, there is no confirmation on the recovery timeline for Lance Stroll.
