Piastri and Norris battle thrills McLaren boss Zak Brown as F1 title fight intensifies. McLaren CEO Zak Brown welcomes the growing rivalry between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown

The internal battle within the McLaren Formula 1 team between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri is not causing concern for the team’s leadership. In fact, Chief Executive Officer Zak Brown sees the growing competition between his two drivers as a positive development and a sign of a healthy, high-performing team dynamic.

Tension building between Norris and Piastri?
The rivalry inside the McLaren garage appears to be heating up—but far from being a problem, it is energizing Zak Brown and the rest of the Woking-based outfit. One factor helping to keep tensions in check is the sizeable points gap both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have built over their nearest rival, Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing. With the Dutch driver now trailing by 69 points in the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship standings, the pressure from behind has been significantly reduced. This situation gives the McLaren teammates more freedom to race each other without external threats complicating matters.

That freedom has already manifested on track during recent Grands Prix. At the Red Bull Ring and again at Silverstone, sparks flew between the two young McLaren drivers. After Oscar Piastri received a time penalty, Lando Norris closed the gap to his teammate and pushed hard to demonstrate that he had superior race pace—suggesting he could have won even without the Australian’s penalty.

Zak Brown embraces the intra-team battle
Despite this close on-track competition, McLaren’s CEO Zak Brown remains fully supportive of the situation. Speaking to Formula 1’s official website, Brown shared his thoughts:
“It’s a fantastic rivalry. I thought the race in Austria was epic. Everyone was eagerly waiting for that head-to-head between Oscar and Lando, and they certainly didn’t disappoint. They were fast, aggressive, gave each other just enough space, and it was truly exciting. I’m looking forward to more races like that.”

Brown emphasized that there is currently no cause for alarm within the team. Thanks to the outstanding performance of the MCL39 car and the team’s strong position in both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships, McLaren can afford to allow its two drivers to race each other without immediate fear of losing ground to rivals.

“It’s not a problem at all,” Brown added. “In fact, it’s quite fun. They want to compete fairly, they have access to the same equipment, and we treat them equally. They both want to beat the other 19 drivers on the grid—including their own teammate—and that’s the spirit we like to see. It’s a pleasure to work with them. There’s huge mutual respect between the two, and the way they race on track reflects how they behave off it.”

Brown attributed the team’s current harmony to the positive culture McLaren has cultivated in recent years. He remains optimistic that this environment will continue to foster healthy competition:
“I think a lot of it comes down to the atmosphere we’ve built in the team, and I don’t see any reason why that should change between now and the final round in Abu Dhabi. I hope Lando and Oscar keep pushing each other all the way, and when it’s over, I hope they shake hands, say ‘great job,’ and then get ready to do it all again next season.”

With both drivers showing maturity, mutual respect, and championship-contending pace, McLaren seems to have struck the right balance between internal competition and team unity—a balance that could prove crucial in the 2025 Formula 1 title race.
