A ‘legendary’ appearance on El Hormiguero
“I laughed out loud and had a great time.” This is how Franco Colapinto summarized his appearance last night on the Spanish channel Antena3’s famous show El Hormiguero on Instagram. The Williams driver achieved sensational viewership: El Hormiguero has a respectable average of 2 million viewers this season, but last night Franco Colapinto reached peaks of 4,660,000 unique viewers tuned into the show, more than double the average.
As we’ve already highlighted, a mania/hype is building around Franco Colapinto, which was somewhat unpredictable until you consider how much a passionate and fiery audience like the Argentine one can ignite. The surge in viewers recorded by El Hormiguero last night is yet another confirmation, and the Williams driver has proven to be a small-screen phenomenon according to the Spanish network.
“He’s the most unstoppable guest I’ve ever had,” said host and comedian Pablo Motos, who was teased by Colapinto during the interview. “Let’s not talk too much about F1, it’s clear you don’t know anything about it,” said Franco Colapinto to Pablo Motos, provoking some cheeky reactions from the 21-year-old. For instance, Colapinto lashed out when asked if it was true that he used to shower in his racing suit as a child. “Who’s the as**ole that told you that?” were Colapinto’s words as he went on to explain that the shower-in-suit incident came from ruining one in the washing machine. He added that washing the suit that way was ‘practical’ as a driver “always on the go.”
When asked how he felt when he met Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso, Franco Colapinto immediately said, “Alonso has an incredible neck,” and then jokingly asked Pablo Motos to intercede with Carlos Sainz because it will be ‘Sainz’s fault’ if Franco Colapinto doesn’t get a seat next year.
Franco Colapinto also participated in a game hosted by the show’s ‘ants’. He had to guess an object quickly passing by on a screen. After immediately recognizing an F1 steering wheel and later the characteristic Argentine ‘mate’, he failed to identify a coffee cup. This led to a colorful “you can all f**k off” from Franco Colapinto, reacting to the difficulty of the game. The appearance was full of lightheartedness and spontaneity, though there was also seriousness when Franco Colapinto explained the challenges he faced when he moved to Italy at age 14 to pursue his dream of becoming an F1 driver, a dream that became reality in this 2024 season, where he has already scored important points for Williams.
