The Triple Crown has always been the goal driving Fernando Alonso’s career. After leaving McLaren in 2018, he attempted to achieve his dream of winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Indianapolis 500. Unfortunately, the two-time Formula 1 world champion and Monaco GP winner fell just short of his objective. The WEC, like Formula 1, brought him fame and honor, but in IndyCar, the Spaniard has yet to find the success needed to complete the set.
Currently racing with Aston Martin in Formula 1, the Asturian champion recently revealed his future expectations, ruling out the Triple Crown and thus IndyCar from his upcoming endeavors: “In a driver’s career, the most enticing trophies are three: winning the Monaco Grand Prix in Formula 1, the 24 Hours of Le Mans in WEC, and the Indy 500 in oval racing with IndyCar. Achieving these three victories makes you the holder of the Triple Crown,” he said during a Cognizant event, according to reports by ‘PitPass.com.’
Fernando Alonso gives up on the Triple Crown
“I’m only missing the IndyCar trophy, but it’s not in my plans at the moment,” Fernando Alonso continued. “I’m focused on Formula 1 for the next 2-3 years. I want the third world championship, which is my only priority. By then, I would be 45-46 years old, and for IndyCar, with the amount of learning I would need to do again, it would be too late.” – the Spaniard explained.
The most realistic goal for Fernando Alonso is “winning the Dakar. It would be a great personal achievement. I’ve won in F1 and endurance racing like Le Mans and Daytona. Winning in rally would mean a lot to me as a driver,” the Aston Martin driver said, according to ‘PitPass.com.’
Mixed feelings for Fernando Alonso
However, despite his statements, Fernando Alonso didn’t entirely rule out a future commitment to IndyCar, indicating the mixed feelings he’s experiencing as a two-time F1 champion: “I can’t say right now that I’ll give up on IndyCar 100%, but as I mentioned earlier, it would be too much for me at that age.”
The former Ferrari and McLaren lives for racing and embodies the spirit of a driver. It will be difficult, but never say never. If there’s a driver currently out there who could succeed in achieving the Triple Crown, it’s Fernando.
