F1 | Palou’s legal battle against McLaren now involves Alonso
In the high-stakes legal dispute between Alex Palou and McLaren, the name of Fernando Alonso has emerged as a crucial point in the Spanish driver’s defense strategy.
Alex Palou is facing a lawsuit valued at approximately $21 million, filed by McLaren, which claims it lost significant sponsorship revenue due to his refusal to join the IndyCar team co-managed with Arrow. However, Palou has flipped the narrative, pointing to the British team’s underperformance in the American series — citing Alonso as a prime example.
“Talent alone isn’t enough, you need the right car”
Alex Palou’s defense is based on a simple yet powerful principle: even the best driver cannot win without the proper machinery. He stated, “If a driver doesn’t have the right car and the best team around them, they can’t win races. There are many examples of top motorsport names who couldn’t perform due to the car they had.”
One of these examples, Alex Palou emphasized, is Fernando Alonso. “Fernando is a two-time F1 world champion and arguably one of the best of his generation. Yet in 2019, with McLaren, he couldn’t even qualify for the Indy 500, whereas two years earlier, with a different team, he nearly won it.”
Alex Palou’s defense underlines that even with excellent drivers, McLaren’s IndyCar project never achieved championship-level results. “A driver might make a difference in a single race, but not over an entire season. The same happened with Alonso,” he added.
The McLaren vs Palou case is still ongoing, but recent revelations — including deleted messages and alleged promises of a future in Formula 1 — are intensifying the dispute. With Alonso’s name now invoked in court, the case has gained even greater media attention.
