Four races completed and none finished in the points for the two-time world champion, in a difficult Bahrain GP also for his teammate.
Second consecutive weekend without points for Aston Martin, which confirmed its struggles in the Bahrain Grand Prix, from free practice through to the race. Once again, a nightmare weekend for Fernando Alonso, beginning with what happened in FP2 when his steering wheel came loose — fortunately while the Spaniard was driving slowly near the final corner.
Once the steering issue was resolved, the two-time world champion was still unable to achieve the goal he’s been chasing since the start of the season: finishing in the points. The Spaniard crossed the line in 15th place, and after the fourth GP of the championship, he remains one of four drivers yet to score a top-ten finish in a race: “We didn’t have the pace all weekend, especially tonight,” he explained after the race. “I was extending my stint on the medium tyres, but then the Safety Car reset everything, and we didn’t benefit from it. We expected this to be a tough track for us, and we need to work on improving the car for the upcoming races. In Jeddah it’s a different challenge, so let’s see if we can improve next week.” – the former Ferrari and McLaren driver pointed out at the end of the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Lance Stroll’s admission
In the internal battle between the two Aston Martin drivers, Fernando Alonso still finished ahead of his teammate Lance Stroll, who ended up 17th and had little to say about the race: “There’s not much to say,” he admitted. “It’s been a really tough weekend for us. Right now, we’re not where we want to be and we’re doing everything we can to turn things around. Let’s see what we can learn from this race and how we perform next week. The characteristics of the Jeddah circuit are very different, so we’ll see how we do there, although we’re not expecting big leaps.”
