In the heart of the 2025 Formula 1 season, Alex Albon is enjoying one of the best moments of his career. With solid performances and growing leadership, the Thai driver has earned the full trust of the Williams team and its Team Principal, James Vowles, who describes him as outstanding both on and off the track. Currently eighth in the drivers’ standings with 70 points and four remarkable fifth-place finishes, Albon has become the driving force behind Williams’ resurgence. He has also played a key role in helping new teammate Carlos Sainz integrate into the team. This season not only marks a revival of Albon’s career but also inspires the entire Grove-based outfit to aim for increasingly ambitious goals, especially with next year’s major regulation changes on the horizon.
Albon’s impressive 2025 season
Albon currently holds eighth place in the championship with an impressive total of 70 points, having scored in 11 of the 18 rounds so far. His best results came with fifth-place finishes in Australia, Miami, Imola, and the Netherlands. These strong performances have helped Williams climb to fifth in the Constructors’ standings. By comparison, his teammate Carlos Sainz — the highly regarded Spanish driver who claimed four Grand Prix victories during his time at Ferrari — has scored 32 points.
In a recent appearance on the official Formula 1 podcast “Beyond The Grid”, James Vowles reflected on Albon’s progress and the crucial contribution he has made to Williams both on and off the track.
“Alex, this year, every time there has been a result on the table, he’s gone and taken it. It’s that simple. His pace has been exceptional. I think if there were any doubts about him, they should now be completely gone from people’s minds,” Vowles said. “The biggest difference I’ve seen in Alex is his increased confidence and self-belief. That’s the key factor — in the team and in himself. Every human being goes through cycles where they feel more or less confident, both in themselves and in their car. This year, Alex doesn’t waver for a second. You simply cannot put him under pressure. He’s completely confident in what he’s doing and in what the car is doing around him. That doesn’t mean the car is perfect — far from it — but his driving force is always: ‘Fix this, improve that, and I’ll go faster.’ That mindset is pushing the whole team in the right direction.”
Albon ready to help Sainz adapt
Vowles also highlighted Albon’s willingness to help Carlos Sainz as he adapts to life at Williams, with the team continuing its upward trajectory in Formula 1 and targeting a return to fighting for podiums and victories in the coming years.
“We have some peculiarities with this car in how it handles certain corners,” James Vowles explained. “But Alex is extremely good at communicating and helping Carlos as well — he doesn’t keep that information to himself. He’s very open: ‘Look, this is what I’m doing here,’ and that helps the engineers steer our development direction. In that sense, he’s more vocal than I’ve ever heard him before, and his guidance is absolutely spot on.”
Albon may not be the most flamboyant driver on the grid, but after being dropped by Red Bull and later joining Williams, he seems to have truly found his place. Thanks also to the trust and structure provided by James Vowles, he has rediscovered his confidence and is now delivering one of the best seasons of his Formula 1 career.
