Williams growth: Albon credits Vowles for honesty and credibility
The breakout team
In 2025, the standout team is undoubtedly Williams. With only six rounds remaining in the Formula 1 World Championship, the Grove-based team sits fifth in the Constructors’ standings, with Alex Albon firmly in eighth place in the Drivers’ Championship. Carlos Sainz, driving the second Williams car, has not enjoyed the same consistency as his teammate but achieved a major milestone with an incredible podium finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, the team’s first podium in four years.
This team now seems like a distant relative of the 2024 squad, which struggled to source spare parts, was frequently hampered by repeated incidents, and often found itself at the back of the grid. Alex Albon, however, highlighted how the challenges of last season were, in some ways, preparatory for the progress made this year.
The role of Vowles
“From the outside, the transition from 2023 to 2024 was seen by the public as a step back in performance,” Albon told Motorsportweek. “But in reality, that period involved rebuilding the foundations of the team. That was one of the most important steps in all the years I’ve spent with Williams. What you are seeing this year is the result of many changes we implemented a couple of years ago.”
Much of the credit for the team’s growth, according to Alex Albon, goes to current team principal James Vowles. The former Mercedes strategy chief took the helm at Williams in February 2023, and his leadership has been instrumental in improving the historic British team. “I’m happy with where I am,” Alex Albon said. “I like that James is very honest about our weaknesses and strengths. This makes the path we’re on credible. He doesn’t say, ‘Next year we’ll be at the top.’ He has a calculated and realistic plan. So far, it seems we’re following the path he outlined, and that makes me feel like I’m in the right place.”
