Aston Martin’s Impatience
Adrian Newey will officially join Aston Martin – following an extended gardening leave – on March 2, just before the start of the Formula 1 season. Although the legendary British engineer has not been involved in the 2025 project, he has not ruled out providing significant assistance, as he suggested in an interview with *Auto, Motor und Sport*: “Clearly, I will be focused on the 2026 car; there is no doubt about that. But Lawrence Stroll will want me to contribute to the 2025 project as well. So, if I can truly help in any way, I will. I don’t know yet, and I won’t know until I start my work.”
The Decision
“If someone had told me just 12 months ago that I would leave Red Bull and start over, I would have said, ‘No, you’re crazy,'” Adrian Newey shared during his conversation with journalist Michael Schmidt. He continued: “For various reasons, though, I felt I wouldn’t be at peace with myself if I stayed at Red Bull. The first difficult decision was asking myself whether I wanted to remain at Red Bull. I concluded that, to be honest with myself, I couldn’t stay.”
Since May 1, Adrian Newey has carefully weighed his options: “Then it became a matter of deciding what to do next. I discussed it with my wife Mandy. We talked about many possibilities, including the fact that I am fortunate enough not to need to work for financial reasons. I could have retired, lounged on a beach, or pursued something entirely different, like the America’s Cup or designing road cars.” He concluded: “But I’ve aspired to be an F1 designer since I was ten years old. Ultimately, I wanted to continue; otherwise, I would have been bored.”
