A challenging journey for Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen’s path to claiming his (so far) four Formula 1 world titles has been anything but smooth. The Dutch champion, who entered the sport at a very young age, initially showcased not only undeniable talent but also a tendency for accidents and an overly ‘reckless’ driving style that earned him significant criticism from industry insiders and fellow drivers alike.
Reflecting on his younger self, the Max Verstappen of today—who will soon become a father—doesn’t feel the need to offer himself any advice. In a Twitch chat just before participating in the virtual 24 Hours of Daytona, the Red Bull driver responded to questions from fans. When asked what advice he would give to the young Verstappen, the reigning world champion gave a response that might have been unexpected.
No advice, mistakes are necessary
“Honestly, I wouldn’t give any advice,” said the 27-year-old driver from Hasselt. “Because, in the end, you have to make mistakes in life. Sometimes you have to learn things the hard way. If you knew everything in advance, I think life would be very boring. Ultimately, once you’ve made a mistake, that’s the only time you change or learn something.”
In 2025, Max Verstappen will be chasing a historic milestone: in 75 years of Formula 1, only one driver has managed to win five consecutive world titles. That feat was achieved by Michael Schumacher, driving for Ferrari, between 2000 and 2004. However, repeating such a streak will be no easy task for the Dutchman, given the fierce competition from Ferrari—welcoming seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton—and McLaren, last year’s Constructors’ Champion.
