It was a wild and unforgettable race at Silverstone, filled with rain, drama, and unexpected twists. German driver Nico Hülkenberg delivered a phenomenal performance to bring the Sauber team back to the Formula 1 podium for the first time in twelve years. Thanks to a perfectly timed tyre strategy and flawless execution, Hülkenberg turned what seemed like an impossible situation into a career-defining achievement.
Driving for Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber, Nico Hülkenberg secured his first-ever podium in Formula 1 after making a critical decision to switch to Intermediate tyres just as rain returned to the Silverstone Circuit. The call proved to be a game-changer in a chaotic Grand Prix full of shifting weather conditions and on-track incidents. Starting from the very back of the grid, the experienced German driver could never have predicted that he would finally reach the podium after so many years of waiting.
The race was defined by unstable weather and several incidents that shuffled the running order multiple times. Hülkenberg made swift progress through the field and soon found himself inside the top ten. His team took an aggressive approach by calling him into the pit lane early to switch tyres—an extremely risky strategy at the time. However, the timing turned out to be perfect, completely altering the trajectory of Sauber’s race.
As heavier rain arrived, the Safety Car was deployed. Nico Hülkenberg gained more positions and climbed up to fifth place. A second Safety Car period followed shortly after, triggered by a collision between Isack Hadjar and Andrea Kimi Antonelli. When the race resumed, Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen spun, allowing Hülkenberg to move into fourth position. He then overtook Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll to claim third place.
With seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton directly behind him and the DRS (Drag Reduction System) enabled, the pressure was immense. Nevertheless, Nico Hülkenberg kept his cool and defended brilliantly, crossing the finish line in third place to secure the first podium of his Formula 1 career—and the first for the Sauber team since the 2012 season.
“We made the perfect call at the perfect time,” Nico Hülkenberg told Motorsport Week after the race.
“I was really struggling with the first set of tyres,” he explained. “Then I got the message that rain was coming. I dove into the pit lane almost instinctively. It turned out to be exactly the right moment. It’s rare for everything to come together like this, but today, everything worked out perfectly.” The bold strategy marked a turning point not only in the race but potentially in Sauber’s season.
Reflecting on the moment when he realized a podium finish was within reach, Hülkenberg said: “After I passed Lance Stroll, I managed to keep Lewis Hamilton behind. We also timed our switch back to slick tyres one lap after he did, and that gave us a ten-second advantage. That’s when I started to believe we could actually do it.”
This incredible result marks a milestone for both Nico Hülkenberg and the Sauber F1 team, and now, with renewed confidence, they can dare to dream even bigger for the races ahead.
