Challenge to Red Bull
During the Miami weekend, McLaren CEO Zak Brown mocked Red Bull with a “tire water” label on his bottle, joking about the insinuations made last year by the team led by Christian Horner against McLaren.
Speaking to media at the circuit, Zak Brown doubled down, without directly naming his rivals: “Historically, F1 teams have accused each other of all sorts of things, but recently one team in particular has used this strategy more than the others. I think there’s a proper way to protest against another team. If you’re going to put these kinds of accusations in writing, you should explain how and what, and pay something. Only then will we put an end to these false and baseless claims, which are unsporting and used as a distraction.”
The proposal
Zak Brown then continued, making an interesting proposal: “If someone genuinely thinks there’s something technically irregular, then they’re free to submit a protest, but they should put money behind it, instead of doing it unnoticed. But if the accusation is wrong, then the amount should be deducted from the budget cap. That way, we can put an end to this type of accusation.”
The American manager has a clear idea and mentioned “$25,000” as a figure that could stop these unfounded complaints to the Federation: “If I had to choose between spending that money on a protest I’m unsure about and developing my car, I’d always choose my car. It needs to be a significant amount,” said Zak Brown.
