The 2025 Formula 1 season continues at Silverstone, home of the British Grand Prix, where McLaren arrives in top form. The confirmation of the incredible work completed by the Woking-based team has now become undeniable. Their resurgence became clear in Austria, especially after a rather anonymous and confusing weekend in Montreal. In Canada, McLaren struggled to interpret the track, and an incorrect setup choice essentially neutralized the full potential of the McLaren MCL39.
However, those issues were swiftly addressed, and the team responded with force at the Red Bull Ring, where McLaren completely outclassed the competition.
Intra-Team Battle Heating Up Between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri
The battle in the bright papaya-colored cars is not just with rivals—it’s happening inside the McLaren garage. British driver Lando Norris secured a well-deserved victory in Austria, but his teammate, the highly competitive Australian Oscar Piastri, remained right on his heels for the full race distance of 300 kilometers.
As the Formula 1 paddock heads to Silverstone for McLaren’s home race, Oscar Piastri has made his intentions clear. The Australian has stated that he is in top form and fully focused on disrupting Lando Norris’s momentum. He expressed his gratitude toward the McLaren team for their continued support and has openly issued a challenge to his teammate.
Lando Norris has responded with calm determination. Racing in front of his home crowd in the United Kingdom, Norris feels a profound responsibility. Known as a passionate fan of Valentino Rossi, the British driver will be surrounded by family and friends, a presence that will provide him with the mental strength needed to handle pressure—especially from the other side of the McLaren garage. With the overwhelming support of British fans, everything will be more intense for him this weekend.
As is often the case for local heroes, Lando Norris will have his own grandstand—appropriately named the “Landostand.” This exclusive area for his fans is just one more reason for him to deliver his best performance. His goal is clear: to carry the momentum forward, secure pole position on Saturday, and stand on the top step of the podium on Sunday. There is no room for any other objective.
Silverstone’s Layout Suits the McLaren MCL39 Perfectly
McLaren arrives at the 2025 British Grand Prix fresh off a solid race weekend, one where the team introduced a package of technical upgrades. The combined effect of these developments led to a noticeable performance improvement. While the Red Bull Ring’s characteristics already suited the MCL39, the updates—especially those contributing to increased front downforce—also greatly improved tire management.
At Silverstone, several factors play in favor of the reigning Constructors’ and Drivers’ World Champions. The high-speed corners are where McLaren can truly exploit its aerodynamic strengths, particularly the vertical load generated by the ground-effect floor. In addition, the McLaren MCL39 is exceptionally agile during rapid direction changes. The rear of the car mirrors the movements of the front end with remarkable stability, showing no signs of oversteer or imbalance—a behavior that teams like Scuderia Ferrari might struggle to replicate if they fail to find the perfect setup compromise.
Team Principal Andrea Stella has repeatedly emphasized that McLaren’s cars are well-suited to circuits with long, flowing corners. The range of cornering speeds found at Silverstone appears to be tailor-made for the MCL39’s characteristics. This is largely due to the car’s excellent front-end response, which is extremely sharp—perhaps even too reactive at times. The versatility and adaptability of the British-built single-seater will play a significant role in setup optimization throughout the weekend.
F1, 2025 British GP: Tire Graining Could Be McLaren’s Only Real Obstacle
Despite the clear strengths of the team currently leading both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships, tire behavior might be the one factor that could slow them down. The situation at Silverstone will be very different from what McLaren faced at the Red Bull Ring. Tire stress will be significantly higher due to the track’s aggressive nature, especially in the high-speed corners that load the tires laterally.
These lateral forces inject a considerable amount of energy into the core of the tire, increasing the likelihood of thermal degradation and a phenomenon known as graining. To complicate things further, Pirelli has opted for a softer tire compound range compared to last year—C2, C3, and C4—adding another variable for the teams to manage. Weather conditions also remain unpredictable, with forecasts suggesting variability throughout the weekend.
McLaren has proven it can manage tire temperatures effectively over a single lap, maximizing performance during qualifying by keeping the compounds within their ideal operating window. However, over long stints in race conditions, the threat of graining—especially on the front-left tire—becomes a real concern.
This tire degradation issue is something the British team has struggled with before, most recently in Canada. Although McLaren has worked to minimize it through specific setup strategies, the challenge remains. The layout of Silverstone, with its high-speed nature and heavy lateral loads, creates the ideal environment for graining to develop, particularly when the cars are heavy with fuel during the opening stages of the race.
For McLaren, this may be the only real obstacle between them and another dominant weekend. Managing it correctly could be the key to extending their championship lead.
